Helen Marten/Oliver Smith
'Do It Yourself!' - Black Flag logo on a cat, creating irony by suggesting domesticity of such a symbol.
I revisted Helen Marten's website recently after looking at consumerism constantly. I am interested in Marten's use of consumer imagery and the abstracted way she places it within her installations. Her work is so slick it almost looks computer generated but then there is a reverse effect with sharp graphical images printed on loose materials (unsure, possibly cotton). This is a juxtaposition I have not yet seen being used with imagery of such a current seemingly aesthetic. I was then linked to Oliver Smith's website where I saw similar ironic juxtapositions like this wooden doorstop with the Windows logo printed on it, perhaps suggesting its redundancy in today's computer market.
I am interested in these works as a way of bringing in more traditional or non-digital aspects.
