Christian Janowski:Casting Jesus:Lisson Gallery

Christian Janowski
Christian Janowski 2
I normally swerve anything Religion related but judging by previous visits to Lisson Gallery(s), I trusted something of interest would be delivered. A casting of the character Jesus, decided by a panel ranging from Vatican Priest to journalist, filmed and presented as a complete video. On the cover this sounds like quite a menial task but actually, irrelevant of the artist's intentions, you are given a chance to observe some interaction the average person might not see every day. There was an underlying embarrassment as the panel of stern Italian men gave directions to the actors, simply trying their best to be Jesus. Viewing this sort of 'behind the scenes' situation reveals some of the desperation that actors go through to make it to the top. Anyway, Janowski's actual intention was not to highlight awkward components of a casting situation, but simply to let the Vatican, and those closely related, decide who is Jesus? Who do they think has the best likeness to Jesus, in reference to how he is perceived image wise as a character in today's mass media environment. "In this new installation, art, religion, reality and fiction are interwoven, blurring the distinctions between each"
